SAN FRANCISCO , CA. – April 21, 2005 – Reginald Johnson, vice president of consulting for MBG, discussed the future of call accounting and IT chargeback with attendees at the IT Financial Management Association held today in San Francisco, CA. He warned that the spiraling use of wireless and VoIP technologies will challenge organizations’ ability to manage newly combined telephony-IT operations. The conference covers IT Expense Management Best Practices, with IT Chargeback as a featured topic.
"The days of traditional telephony are coming to end, as data and voice converge,” explained Johnson to attendees. “With the explosion in wireless services and the acceleration in VoIP deployments, the way organizations manage telecommunications services is changing. These two types of technologies reflect the challenges that organizations will face as they attempt to strategically manage these services the way they managed traditional telecom services," added Johnson.
The increasing importance on corporate chargeback processes are based on some dramatically increasing statistics regarding the growth of wireless and VoIP services. According to a 2003 survey conducted by the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTI), since 1998, the average consumption of minutes by consumers has risen over 250 percent. This led the average bill to increase by 27%. VoIP is also seeing increased growth, as more companies turn to this technology for cost savings and increased flexibility for mobile employees. According to a study conducted by the Radicati Group last year, the number of corporate telephone lines that use Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is expected to climb to 44 percent by 2008, from its current state of 4 percent of all corporate lines.
"Telecom and IT managers need to prepare for this explosion in use,” Johnson concluded. “Failure to do so will effectively erase the significant cost-savings that companies have achieved in recent years.”
